Vilkove Lipovans Quarter

Fishers on the Danube River
Operation: year round
Location: Vilkove
Included in the following tours:

A small town of Vilkovo was founded in 1746 by Lipovans, the descendants of the Old Rite followers who were persecuted for religious reasons in Russia and fled to these marshy lands in the Danube Delta. Lipovan community is big in Vilkovo, about 70% of the population. They still do not shave beards and wear the same style clothes as their ancestors. Most streets in this city are channels, and the main vehicle is a boat. There are only 4 terrestrial streets in Vilkovo. The Old Orthodox Rite Church of Saint Nicholas is located on one of them. Vilkovo inhabitant’s homes go out to the channels mostly. Thus, it is quite usual to ship cows by boats to the terrestrial pastures for daytime and return to stable in the evening, again in a boat, which is barely bigger then a cow and rather unstable with such a passenger on board. Sludge collected from the Danube bottom is used as a fertilizer in Vilkovo’s gardens, where popular Ukraine-wide strawberry and grapes are grown. Each Vilkovo house has its own dock. Having a boat is a must. Houses are built of sun dried sludge bricks and raised on broken shells cushions. The Danube River brings tons of sludge to the Delta; therefore shores of the channels are patched up by hosts daily. Simple wooden bridges connect shores of the narrow channels; ends of the bridges are not fixed for easy dismantling when oversized items are shipped. Fishery, winemaking, vegetable and fruit production is common and popular in this small town hidden behind the reeds on the flood land.

We have just returned from visiting Ukraine on a train/hotel package that you arranged for us. I must say that all went well with the trip, all the arrangements went very well, the arrangements you made for us were just right. The trains were right on time. Reasonably well equipped and clean. The hotel folks were very pleasant and accommodating. We would be pleased to recommend your services to future travelers.
Thanks again for making our trip so hassle free.
